How to Raise Average Order Value on Shopify Without Discounting Yourself to Death

Bigger carts are the cheapest growth you will find. Here are the AOV tactics that work on Shopify, how to implement them in your theme, and the ones that quietly hurt your margins.

Getting a shopper to your store is expensive. Getting them to add one more item to the cart they are already building is nearly free. That is why average order value is the lever most store owners underuse, and why it is usually the second thing I look at after conversion rate.

This guide covers the AOV tactics that actually work on Shopify, how to implement them without turning your store into a pop-up gauntlet, and the common mistakes that trade margin for a bigger headline number.

First, know your number

Open Shopify analytics and find your average order value for the last 90 days. Then look at the distribution: how many orders are a single item, and which products most often appear together? Those two facts tell you which tactics below will work for you.

A store where 80% of orders are single items has a different problem from a store where people buy three things but never the fourth. Do not skip this step.

The tactics that work

1. A free shipping threshold, set just above your current AOV

This is the simplest and most reliable AOV tactic on Shopify. Set your free shipping threshold roughly 15 to 25% above your current average order, then show a progress bar in the cart drawer: "You are $12 away from free shipping."

Shoppers will add a small item to clear the bar far more often than you expect. The key is the visibility. A threshold nobody sees does nothing.

2. Bundles that solve a problem

A bundle is not three random products with a discount. It is a complete answer to what the shopper came for. The starter kit, the full routine, the gift set. When BuzRub sells a Combo Pack of their two rubs, it is not a discount play; it is the obvious choice for someone who has not tried either.

Shopify's native bundles and the Shopify Bundles app handle inventory properly, so you no longer need a third-party app for basic bundles.

3. Cross-sells on the product page that make sense

"Frequently bought together" works when the pairing is genuine. Pair the lens cleaner with the glasses, the rub with the grill tool, the refill with the dispenser. If your cross-sell block shows random products from the catalog, it trains shoppers to ignore it.

Keep it to two or three items, show them below the add-to-cart button rather than above it, and make adding them a single tap.

4. One in-cart offer, not five

The cart drawer is prime real estate because the shopper has already committed. One well-chosen offer here works. Five stacked offers, a countdown timer and a spin wheel do not; they make the cart feel like a trap and cost you checkout completions.

Good in-cart offers: a complementary accessory, a size upgrade, a gift wrap option, or the subscription version of what is already in the cart.

5. Subscriptions for anything consumable

If you sell something people run out of, a subscribe-and-save option is the single most powerful AOV and lifetime value tactic available to you. A one-time buyer who becomes a subscriber is worth many times the original order.

The implementation matters. One skincare client added a dedicated "why subscribe" page and an in-cart nudge, written directly in Liquid, that shows one-time buyers exactly what they are leaving on the table. The nudge is specific, calm and positioned where the decision is being made.

6. Tiered pricing and volume discounts

For products people buy in quantity, show the per-unit price falling as quantity rises. "Buy 2, save 10%. Buy 3, save 15%." Shopify Functions makes this possible natively on most plans now, without an app, and it is especially effective for consumables, supplies and B2B.

7. Post-purchase upsells

A one-click offer shown after payment but before the thank-you page carries zero risk to the original conversion. The shopper has already paid. Keep the offer relevant to what they just bought, price it modestly, and do not show more than one. The 96 Shades Shopify Plus build included post-checkout upsells for exactly this reason.

8. Gift options and add-ons at checkout

Gift wrapping, a handwritten note, expedited shipping or extended warranty are small add-ons that cost little to offer and lift AOV quietly. On Shopify Plus, checkout extensibility lets you present these cleanly in checkout itself.

The tactics that hurt

Not everything that raises AOV is good for your business. Watch out for these.

Discounting to inflate the number. If AOV rose 15% because you ran a 20% off sale, you are poorer, not richer. Track margin per order alongside AOV.

Aggressive pop-ups. Anything that interrupts the shopper before they have added a single item is working against conversion, which matters more than AOV. Earn the first add-to-cart before you ask for a second.

Fake urgency. Countdown timers that reset on refresh and "only 2 left" badges on products with deep stock get noticed, screenshot and shared. They damage trust for a short-term lift.

Too many apps. Each upsell app loads scripts on every page. A store with three overlapping AOV apps is often slower and converts worse than a store with one tactic built into the theme. See our guide on auditing Shopify apps.

A worked example

Say your store does 1,000 orders a month at an average of $48, with free shipping over $75. Most orders are one or two items, and your most common second purchase is a $14 accessory.

Lower the free shipping threshold to $60, roughly 25% above your current average, and show the progress bar in the cart drawer. Add the $14 accessory as the single cross-sell on your top three product pages. Then add one in-cart offer: the accessory again, for shoppers who skipped it on the product page.

If one in six shoppers responds to any of those nudges, your average order moves from $48 to a little over $50. That is a modest-sounding change, but across 1,000 orders a month it is more than $2,000 in additional monthly revenue from traffic you already had, with no extra ad spend. Stack a subscription option on a consumable product and the lifetime value math gets considerably better.

The point is not the specific numbers, which will be different for your store. The point is that small, well-placed nudges on an existing cart add up fast, and they cost almost nothing to run once built.

How to measure what is working

Ship one tactic at a time. Note the launch date. After two to three weeks, compare average order value, conversion rate and gross margin against the same period before. If AOV rose and conversion held, keep it. If conversion dropped, the tactic is too aggressive. If AOV rose only because of discounting, rethink it.

Do not evaluate AOV in isolation. The number that matters is revenue per visitor, which combines conversion rate and order value. A tactic that nudges AOV up 5% while nudging conversion down 10% is a loss.

Where to start

If most of your orders are single items, start with the free shipping threshold and one relevant cross-sell. If shoppers already buy multiple items, start with bundles and subscriptions. If you are on Shopify Plus, add a single post-purchase offer.

Three tactics, built properly, will do more than ten apps fighting for the same cart.
